You are getting it, now. However one of my problems is that you chose
to use the release of GRUB that was tailored to be useful to Red Hat
itself. The LFS project wants people to use either the source code for
their work or obtain it by related methods.

I still do not see a problem with how it is supposed to work. I would
also comment out the splash image before attempting other work. And
did you go over the device map to make sure there were no other
problems with your install?
