I have not use Grub with a serial console, but does it use the same stage ?
You have a nice menu or just a prompt ? Do you see the Message with Grub
loading ? Does it takes some time ?

A debian. In fact I have differents configurations : a NFS root one, a
normal boot which uses the internal linux on the PC104, and an autonomous
one. The last one is only uses in special condition (not for dev, only lauch
a internal developped program) and that's the one that take about 10
seconds to boot. In fact, it uses a compressed initrd which contains a linux
kernel, a busybox (for shell and other commands), a few scripts and a
program with needed library. It does not use all the rc scripts provided in
a normal linux distribution, it just lauch busybox init/linuxrc script and a
program for controlling a bot.
