Error 18 strangeness

Hi,

First timer here - apologies if I'm in the wrong place.

I use grub 0.97 to multiboot win, lin, and solaris. It's installed in a
data-only FAT32 partition on my main drive. (The 2nd partition. 1st is Win
7) The 2nd drive is layed out thusly: FAT32, solaris, solaris, extended,
big NTFS, linux swap, linux, linux, giant NTFS, linux. It's a 1TB drive.
Previously it was a 500G drive, and before that 320G. The same version of
grub is installed in the FAT32 partition on the 2nd drive.

With the 500G drive, but not with the 320G (IIRC) or 1TB, I could boot the
grub on the main drive and chainload any of the solaris or linux installs on
the 2nd drive. W/the 320G (again, IIRC) or the 1TB, attempting to boot any
of the linux installs gets me error 18.

Here's the strangeness: I can boot the primary grub, chainload the grub on
the 2nd drive, and chainload any of the linux installs from there just fine
- including the one at the very top of the 1TB drive.

So at least I have a workaround, but any ideas what's up here? BIOS
weirdness, grub issues, sunspots?

Thanks,
Z.
