A number of pieces of music use ottavation markings that affect only a  
single voice on the stave.  See  
http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.gnu.lilypond.general/61276 for one  
example, and the attached image for another in a piece of (copyright) music  
that I own.  It would be better if ottavation markings only affected a  
single voice (and if they are intended to apply to a stave, then the  
marking should be duplicated in each voice and then only shown in one).
