I just want to point out that these are clearly two different things, an  
ottava marking for a staff and an ottava marking for some section of music  
within a voice.  There's no need to use the same syntax to ask for each,  
and if the same syntax is used there's no reason to assume that they'd call  
the same code.  One applies to the staff, one to a section of notes and  
other than the 8va they are denoted differently.  Of course another  
requirement would be that the midi would come out correctly in either case.
