problem with configure script on solaris 5.6 machine

Hi,

I have a problem with the configure script for the GNU m4 macro package.

When running, it immediately complains about a problem

checking whether /fid/tools/gnu/bin/make sets $MAKE... ./configure: bad
substitution

(where /fid/tools/gnu/bin/make is gmake). I can patch this by using some
lines
from the bison configure script, but then I immediately hit another bug

checking for minix/config.h.. ./configure: conftest.c: execute permission
denied
grep: can't open conftest.out



Any ideas? Is this a result of a broken solaris bourne shell, or is it
something deeper?
