Sorry for the long delay in replying, the web forum has not been as actively
tracked as the address@hidden mailing list.

It sounds like ./configure was not finding your installation of GNU m4, but
we would need to see the failing config.log output to be sure.  As long as
you have installed GNU m4 on your PATH, and ./configure was generated with
autoconf, it should be finding GNU m4; if it is not, then you have an
autoconf bug on your hands.  Meanwhile, m4 1.4.4 has been released.

Let us know if we can still help resolve this problem, or if we can close out
the incident.
