Weird; that makes it look like kill(1) was not found.  What does this do,
using your just-built m4?

echo 'changequote([,])syscmd([kill -9 $$ || echo "oops: $?"])' | src/m4

I'm assuming that it will print oops, in which case I can modify the test
to skip the test if kill fails.
