did that.  It was a problem with screen which I'd forgotten about
(largely from having read/understood that part of the code _long_ ago,
before italics became an issue).

So... I reverted that part, and propped up screen in some additional
places.  And I wrote a nice long explanation in the entry to help avoid
the temptation to go that way.
