tmux is being actively developed.  screen just recently had a new
stable release after long years of silence.

Could you guys who understand the situation and get problematic
behavior please file bug reports to both of these software? :)

Italic just becoming widespread (by being implemented in xterm and
added to the xterm terminfo) I see a good chance that tmux/screen
developers would be happy to fix their support.
