?? I'm probably misunderstanding. But tmux, like screen, sets
TERM=screen if I don't configure anything else. I'm launching
tmux from xterm-256color, and (have to) set 
set-option -g default-terminal screen-256color
in tmux.conf if I want 256 colors - what's wrong with that?
