One could run the command in an Emacs *shell* window. You can cut and paste the binary output into a real file and use it. I just now did it with 'tar'.
However, I agree that the benefits of this use outweigh the cost. Particularly since the bad behavior with binary data sent to arbitrary terminals can *really* mess them up, e.g., crash your system. And this particularly bites new users, which is not helpful at all.
