xboard is a somewhat old fashioned program that generally requires a
command-line argument to tell it the main thing you want it to do.  You
can't always start it with no arguments and set everything from the GUI.
If you give xboard no arguments, by default it thinks you want to play
chess against GNU Chess and that you have GNU Chess installed under the
name "gnuchessx".  Maybe you wanted to do something else with xboard, or
maybe you have GNU Chess installed under a different name.

By the way, most Linux distributions package both xboard and GNU Chess,
so you probably didn't need to build it from source.
