Yay!  Just sh is a non-starter for me; it is too limited.
After that I'm agnostic on the various scripting languages.

subversion isn't nearly as close as we'd all like.

First, it still has some problems.  For instance the performance isn't
that great (this would be one of the major reasons to switch away from
cvs).  Second, even once the problems are ironed out, it will be some
time before the major repositories switch -- I'd imagine they will be
pretty conservative about this sort of thing.  I'm guessing we won't
see subversion deployed in a substantial way for 18 months at least.
