DotGNU will not directly compete with products like Groove, but
DotGNU will provide a good platform on which such software
products can be built.

.NET threatens the freedom of the 'net in two ways:

- Microsoft wants to dominate the market of internet servers so
  that they can then use monopoly power to change protocols etc.

- Microsoft wants to centralize authentication services for all
  ecommerce worldwide on servers operated by Microsoft.

The DotGNU has been started to specifically address these two
threats.  Of course Microsoft is also developing lots of
software that is not directly threatening in any of these ways,
and it would be good to have Free Software replacements for that
also.  Developing such applications is outside the scope of the
DotGNU project, but DotGNU wants to be a good platform (like an
operating system) for them.
