OK, I am not suggesting "hacking" the interpreters more than needed. If
they need hacking to be embeddable, and to be turned into a component,
then so be it. I am looking at the idea of wrapping them, of creating
components that you can easily use these said C functions from various
scripting languages, or even link them into one large executable.

All of these things should not require any major changes to the
existing software, and if they do, then work is needed. But that would
just to upgrade the software to be more flexible.
