It's quite a nice idea ... I almost did the same thing
(the Java compiler ...) ..

The vb.net compiler is not very advanced .. but I 
suspect the jscript interpreter would be a much more
educating experience (ie handcoded lexer,parser) , 
and might have you work more on the features than on 
memory management :)

Also IMHO Jscript and scripting C# applications with
jscript would be really more interesting than vb.net 
to me ..
