There is a script called "madcow" in pnet which kinda does some 
default tests on the system and gives a decent problem diagnosis
or at least gives us a decent snapshot of the problem.

Could you try that ?... (and we need your config.log anyway)

PS: export CC=/usr/bin/gcc or something might help as well
