It was an extremely long pathname. Apparently when I used midnight
commander to copy some files from another host there were circular
symlinks, and for some reason these were not properly handled. This
created an insanely deep hierarchy of folders. That was the problem.

Would it be possible to trap this kind of error and give a more
meaningful error message? I assume that the error message is something
like "too long filename" somewhere?
