I cannot reproduce this: for me it shows the definition of that
function (after uncompressing font-core.el.gz).

Can you visit .el.gz files in Emacs? does that work?  If not, I guess
your gzip installation needs fixing.

bug or a cockpit error, post to help-gnu-emacs@gnu.org first.  This
list is not the best place for such discussions.
