Thank you both for these links, I'll be reading them in a minute.

I'm currently thinking; if the change is as simple as in Sergeys
patch, then that must mean they have compatible (enough) setup()
functions, so I could try to import setuptools, and then catch the
import error and fall back to distutils if it didn't work.

... am no longer just thinking it. It's done and pushed.
