![]() Anyhow that is how it happens in our present German
Republic.
To counterbalance thistendency, general culture
should be preserved, at least in its idealforms.
The principle is that birth within the confines of
the State gives onlythe status of a subject.
Incontradistinction to this purely material value
there is the idealvalue.
It is a work whichcan be accomplished only through
the permanent struggle of everyday lifeitself.
But thefact that the enemy likes this form of
government is the worst kind ofcondemnation.
It may be that money has become the one power that
governs life to-day.
There is quite a good deal of truth in all this.
The principle is that birth within the confines of the State gives onlythe status of
a subject. It is on this that amans value must be estimated, and not on the amount
of recompensereceived.
Aliens are those who enjoy thesame rights in some
other State. But thefact that the enemy likes this form of government is the worst
kind ofcondemnation.
But when itdid come our lack of this patriotic
passion was avenged in a terribleway.
Of course such a reform seems impossible in the
world as it is to-day. Dont say that under suchconditions poorer work would be
done.
In most cases nowadays a person acquires civic
rights by being bornwithin the frontiers of a State.
Naturally he will have tooccupy himself even with
the smallest details. The man who wants to become a professor of history candevote
himself to all the details later on. This act of inauguration incitizenship shall be
a solemn ceremony. And the ideal of Hellenic culture should bepreserved for us in
all its marvellous beauty.
The training in the army is of ageneral
kind.
Yet there are notmany who recognize the
significance of celibacy in this relation.
He ought to contribute to the conservation of
thosefoundations.
The practical loss thus caused to the nation
isincalculable. And one day the man receives a card which informs him thathe has
become a citizen.
It is required that he shall not be a burden to the
State ofwhich he wishes to become a citizen.
There is quite a good deal of truth in all
this.
It may be that money has become the one power that
governs life to-day. The dread of chauvinism, which is a symptom of our time, is a
sign ofits impotence.
A stock of knowledge packed into the brain will not
suffice for themaking of discoveries.
Themore worthy its form and its inner national
being.
Therefore the Peoples State will one day have to
abolish suchhalf-measures.
This task is comparatively simple because it can be
recognized andcarried out almost mechanically. Incontradistinction to this purely
material value there is the idealvalue.
A civilization isfighting for its existence. It is
not, however, in our model German Republic but inthe U.
