It is common today that you have to run the `autogen.sh' script if you
want to compile directly from a revision control system.  Reason is
that the RCS should contain only files which are not generated.

Regarding your items 1, 2, and 3 I have to check later.

The build system is fine, however, we forgot to mention in the docs
that you need GNU Make 3.80 or newer (the $(value ...) function is
needed).  Meanwhile, the build system checks that.
