A difference is that many free software projects have a "cabal" who
decide what to do. If they think that your idea is crap then they will
say so and you can go fork or create a patch. There is also an element
that many Free Software projects are not entirely open to everyone.
Software development imho is quiet different to running an
organisation, but at the same time AFFS could be more open. The whole
ctte list being private thing isn't the greatest way of having things
done and we have talked about making it more open in the past with
various ideas on how to actually achieve that.
I guess you are saying that the ctte list should be open for all? or
just have archives available to everyone? or something else? and how do
other organisations deal with the day to day running and co-ordination
and keeping a dialogue going with members of the organisation?
I guess that another problem with opening the list is that we often do
the review of the newsletters etc. on the list, this would mean that by
the time the newsletter came out it would no longer be news ;) and
the list has in the past been used to facilitate a few communications
with other parties that they would rather have been private while a
dialogue was ongoing.
I'm certainly glad that we are getting some interesting discussion going
already.
