I don't think bandwidth is really an issue these days. Most considerations went out the window, like Memory usage and Disc space. Re bandwidth, you are running mutt on your mail server? If so you wouldn't be downloading locally.
I don't think there is any noticeable difference in Thunderbird loading my mailbox or email msg which are in HTML (CPU increases in last decade eliminated any conversion time cost). Perhaps this is just mutt "not being very good"? ;) If it is, why not just swithc to a "better" client?
So I think we shouldn't be forced to keep the list non-HTML on the basis of certain text-based email clients which are slow and not in such common usage... (Am I going to get flamed!?)
