  I was'nt able to stop patching - one bug followed the next - in result 
  1248 out of 16259 total tests failed:-( 275 less than in CVS ;-) and
  I still dont have translate-pathname and logical pathnames complete ...
  nor did I found the time to attack the formatter or to get much closer
  to the final goal of getting CLC/ASDF up and running.

  anyway - here is a patch ... for 2.7.0 unstable only !

  fixing :
  - make-pathname, merge-pathname and related (about 50%)
  - directory (about 90%)
  - with-standard-io-syntax (about 90%)
  - ./configure --without-x
