/home avoids restoring from backups (I still make them regularly), and
reinstalling and configuring system-wide packages is a pain, but not a
big one. I also kind of like the new computer "smell" that results from
not upgrading. It also seems to avoid certain problems.

You're right. I was being too conservative. I would do it differently
today, but the remaining 27GB on /home will still last me quite a while.
