Thank you for the replies. Here are three sets of data. Output from
lspci, which is character-identical from both systems; dmesg from
gNewSense - nothing about eth0; dmesg from Mandriva - entries about eth0.
One other question I have is where do I find information on kernel
parameters? I just guessed when I set up the boot line in grub. Come to
think of it, here is my grub/menu.lst:
