I didn't want to create a very long message but after using cli gnokii
as below, I successfuly retrieved the contents of the phone book using
xgnokii, the only difference from before is that the battery is full. I
am worried about trying to upload anything to the phone in case it
becomes corrupted. Anyway maybe a clue can be found in the output from :-

The phone displays "phone number not valid" but it's my own number.
Maybe this will help as well the network info looks valid, the sim
memory status matches what the phone displays, the phone reports memory
as 95% free, the phone reports 7 unread messages in the inbox and the
battery icon shows full :-
