Yes, exactly!

Yes, to demonstrate this, copy the file regression/games/incident42.sgf
to your working directory and run:
gnugo -l incident42.sgf --quiet -L 88 --decide-string P16 -o vars.sgf
The sgf variation file vars.sgf contains very useful debugging
information.
