[gnugo-devel] long time to move

Enclosed is an sgf file of our SlugGo playing white against
GNU Go playing black with 4 handicap stones.

In our log file it looks like after our move #113 at J4 it took
19,798 seconds for GNU Go playing at level 15 to reply
at F13.

With this exception, and one other at 510 seconds, GNU
Go's slowest moves on the G4 Macs tend to be between
100 and 200 seconds.

Just for the sake of general info, on our new G5 cluster
nodes the longest GNU Go moves out of 10 game sets
from our limited sample of 40 games are:

        48s, 13s, 22s, 12s

So, the slowest move is 9.3 times as fast on the G5. In
terms of the total time used by GNU Go in a 10 game
set, the G5 is 8.0 times as fast as the G4 if we drop the
outlier game with the 19,800 second move from the
averages (2149s/game G4 v.s. 268s/game G5)

By comparison, our SlugGo code is 1.8 times as fast
on the G5, and the speed up factor of our slowest move
is 1.3. We intend to do some profiling in the future to
find out why the huge difference, given that SlugGo's
engine is GNU Go running at level 10.

Cheers,
David
