A well known phenomenon, depending on the clocking and the quality of the DA
conversion of the graphic card - where Matrox or ATI traditionally provided
better quality

I have positive experiences with the ATI Radeon series, which has both good 2D
and 3D acceleration right out of the box in XFree 4.x and produces a clear
stable image.

RE: nVidia

My son runs an nVidia card for 3D gaming.  What I always did was to edit /etc/inittab to run level 3,  reboot the computer into run level 3, make the nVidia configuration changes.  Run startx. If everything is good then change /etc/inittab back to run level 5.

It does require a reboot but gets around the persistance of the Xserver in Redht/Mandrake.
