I am not sure whether referral "status" information would belong in a to_do table or to a referral table (or both) but a regional system uses the following states to define/track the status of referrals.

Useful? Where to implement?

Each referral in PRS has a current status which changes throughout the referral process.  The status and order of the referral determines what actions, if any, are allowable by the consulting or referring physician at that point in the process.

Format of the info which follows:

Status

Description

Pre-referral

Referral is being prepared by the referring physician, and has not yet been sent to the consulting physician.

New
Referral has been sent to the consulting physician, but has not yet been viewed.

Pending
Referral with an ongoing request from the consulting physician for more information.

Declined
The consulting physician has declined the referral.

To be Booked     
Referral has been accepted by the consulting physician; the appointment needs to be scheduled by the consulting physician staff.

Tentative
The appointment has been scheduled by the consulting physician, but has not yet been confirmed with the patient.

Confirmed
Appointment has been confirmed by the patient.

Patient No Show
Patient does not attend confirmed appointment.

Signed Off
The consulting report has been written and sent to the referring physician.

Closed

The consulting report has been viewed and accepted by the referring physician, completing the referral.
