How did you open the copy ?

First I copied it to my visible file area using the Terminal application which uses bash.

- by simply double-clicking the file
the above worked after I changed the file extension to .gif

- by opening the context menu on the file and using "open with ..."
yes, however on account of the incompatibility of the original file extension (.tmp) I had to change the listed applications from "Recommended" to "All". The equivalent of such "force opening" can be achieved via drag-and-drop on the Mac by holding down the Mac option +command keys before dragging the file of interest onto the icon of the application of interest.

- by opening a Mac graphics viewer and loading the file explicitely ?
this works only after changing the file extension to something compatible like .gif

Tools > config registry ... unhandled exception

This is being deprecated.

... because ???

See this page
        http://wiki.gnumed.de/bin/view/Gnumed/ConfigFiles

This suggests that I may need to set up a file
        mime_type2file_extension.conf

I could not see that any such file is included (for example) in the Mac app that Sebastian bundled... does it need to be created "from scratch" and should it be copied inside the GNUmed_0.2.8.0 "package" that I downloaded and if so should it reside at the level of
        gm-from-cvs.conf
inside
        (app)/Contents/Resources
or else at the level of
        export
        logs
        xDT
in
        ~/djb/gnumed/
