I have solved this, too, in CVS HEAD:

        <$gender_mapper::Sehr geehrter Herr//Sehr geehrte Frau//Hallo::35$>

will result in the proper strings for "male//female//other
gender" truncated to 35 characters. Note that the actual
strings returned for male//female//other are, of course,
arbitrary...   ;-)
