Set it to C. This stupid bug has been there for ages  and I believe this is 
due to the fact that the closed source bitrock installer tries to work on 
Windows and MacOS.

Unless I am mistaken Windows does not have UTF8 but Mac (BSD) has. That is 
what you get from a closed source installer.

Anyway using 'C' will work.

I guess this little issue could drive us into the arms of the macports 
version.

Someone would have to investigate of the macports version would be.
For one one would need to set a postgres password on the command line.

there will be no start/stop scripts in applications ? However one could lift 
those from the enterprisedb version I guess.

Still we have always said that for in the wild installations a support company 
should be hired. Those 'professionals' should be able to properly set this up.
And since PG needs to be set up only once in your life I don't see a problem 
there.
