After virtually struggling for a week with utf-8; unicode and devnagari 
package, I switched over to xelatex. I was amazed with the simplicity of 
system. I am sure, most latex users will switch over to xelatex in future. I 
realised this when I attempted to create a beamer presentation in hindi using 
lYx. the packages mentioned by dr karsten has inadequate support for unicode. 
There is lot of discussion on net.
