can be, but may also be omitted, at least in some placeholders?

Which, if this is correct, can instead of having to provide a value for 
'max_chars'

        $<field_1::::max_chars>$

permit (in at least some cases) to omit the value, and to instead simply have

        $<field_1::::>$

??
