Actually this issue is much smaller now with the 'new' fortran code starting to be usable, ( and since it also uses the tree-ssa branch and most of the C structures i the tree ), I also agree that the tree-ssa branch would be a good place to start.
I am very interested in starting of on 3DNow / MMx / EMMX instructions, since this would be a nice warmup working with the backend, and there is some previous work on backends ( GLP'ed ).
Also I think it would be important to have good documentation, since I just have started hacking at gcc after being away from it for a while, and the gcc documentation is not good, ( for someone wanting to help ), take the tree-ssa issue, it's dokumented in the code !
So in order to attract competent developers, ( not scare them away ), I think dokumentation would be a start, perhaps even the policy ( ouch ! ) of 'nothing goes in if it's not documented' ?
Silly issue, but relevant ( IMHO ). / Lars Segerlund.
