Next thing I'll need to do is find out what the best way that I can help to support gpsd and the team (given that I don't think you want me coding).

I think it's already there. :-)

Have your device generate any metadata it likes in JSON form.  The lexical
analyzer should detect it as a packet of type JSON and pass it through.
