Yup. You got what I had in mind. Sorry for the nonsense. I'm happy that at least my confusion triggered an interesting discussion about \c :-}

Sooo, both "no-op escape" and "dummy character|escape|whatever" seem good things to me.

And yes, the different behavior of

.B foo\c
bar

between groff(1) and mandoc(1) surprised me too. I, as you, thought that the intuitive behavior would be as [.BR foo bar], and reported it to the mailing list a few months ago.
