[Help-bash] controlling input from fifo

I want to control the app dialog with input from a fifo
I know this is not the proper place for this question so please point me to 
where I could find a bit of help
I will gladly go through all the things I have done wrong if you like
I am using dialog because I am not running X
The objective is to control dialog with a remote via lirc
