From my experience, there are enough differences between RHL 7.x and RHL 9 in terms of the kernel and libs that rely on it that statically linking is just begging for trouble. I've bitten the bullet here and just set up my build process to crank out a package for every release we need to support and I don't even think about trying to share packages across releases anymore.

Don't do that. Last time I tried it cfengine segmentation faulted while
copying KDE in berkleydb function. The bug was never solved, but I used
it dynamlically from now on. This was on debian / stable (woody)
