Are you looking for any kind of mandrake, or the exact version ? Because 
 for a 10.1, you have to look for "Mandrakelinux release 10.1", not 
just "Mandrakelinux".

BTW, if you want to be coherent, you have to look in 
/etc/mandrakelinux-release, the /etc/mandrake is just a compatibility 
symlink susceptible to be dropped in the future.
