If font-lock is in effect in the buffer -- see it _locks_ the `font'
(i.e., face)...
[If you use global-font-lock-mode, then there will still be some buffers
who's mode doesn't define any font-locking stuff, so font-lock won't
actually be turned in those buffers.]
