Post script printing from emacs

Hi,

I would like to make a one column printout and tried the command
"(setq ps-number-of-columns 1)" in my .emacs file.
I also would like to change to portrait printout instead of landscape and tried 
the command "(setq ps-landscape-mode 'nil)".

I still get a two column landscape printout. What have I done wrong? Are there 
any other files to look into exept from .emacs and site-start.el?
