startup issue

Hello,

When I start emacs with a file, the window is automatically split horizontally into two
from the beginning. How do I remove this setting (that is, no initial splitting by default)? 

I am using GNU Emacs 23.1.1 (x86_64-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.20.0).
