Restoring windows layout after ediff-regions-wordwise

Hello folks,

I was looking at a solution to restore my existing window layout after 
quitting ediff and found the following:

The solution is basically two hooks, the first one saving the window 
layout and the other one restoring it. But this solution doesn't work 
for ediff-regions-wordwise. Both the entry and the exit hooks are 
called, I can see that based on messages I have added there. But the 
window layout is not restored, but instead it is messed up even more. 
What could be the problem?
