FYI, the make LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH problem is due to a 
broken make.  make's configure doesn't properly check for suid 
privledges in some systems, so it doesn't pass certain environment 
variables (like LD_LIBRARY_PATH) to the make subprocess.
