I finally took the time to describe the correct procedure on the wiki
(for now; I'll incorporate that into the official documentation somewhen
later). Please have a look at
<URL:http://hurd.gnufans.org/bin/view/Mig/BuildingMIG> and
<URL:http://hurd.gnufans.org/bin/view/Mach/BuildingGNUMach> and see if
that helps you further. A few places are tagged with ``[TODO]''; it's a
wiki, so...
